One of the biggest misconceptions about commissioned artwork is that the artist simply paints exactly what they're told. In reality, the best commissions are collaborations.
Over twenty years ago I accepted my very first major commission through an interior designer. To be honest, I was a little nervous. I wondered whether painting someone else's vision would limit my creativity.
It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made.
When the finished paintings were installed, I realised something important.
The artwork wasn't the hero.
It was part of a much bigger story.
The paintings helped create the atmosphere, warmth and feeling the designer had imagined for the home.
That experience completely changed the way I think about commissioned artwork.
Since then I've completed many large commissions for private homes, businesses and Sheldon College here in Queensland. Many of those projects came from the trust built during that very first commission.
Today, I see every commission as a partnership.
Some clients know exactly what they want.
Others simply know how they want a room to feel.
Either way, I guide the process, discussing size, colours, lighting, location and the overall mood before I ever pick up a brush.
